Staff Positions and Duties

Everyone on staff is expected to:

  • Follow the standards of journalism as taught in Journalism 1 & Journalism 2.
  • Adhere to deadlines.
  • Constantly generate new content.
  • Edit your peers’ work.
  • Produce quality work that will attract and retain audiences.
  • Work well alone or in small groups.
  • Accept and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attend events outside of school to report on them as needed.
  • Stay after school to work in the lab as needed.
  • Report breaking news as needed.

  • Editor-in-Chief
  Inspires and motivates staff with innovative ideas and outstanding effort. 
  Carefully evaluates site according to CSPA and NSPA standards, striving for top placement in national competitions.
  Handles and oversees all aspects of production, from reviewing content for accuracy, clarity, and overall quality, to managing content on the website.
  Conducts staff meetings and keeps students and editors informed of deadlines.
  Holds students accountable for meeting deadlines/postings.
  Turns around content in a timely manner.
  Handles breaking news and other reporting assignments as needed.
  Directs the breaking news team.
  Produces high quality content to push the limits of the site.
  Should plan to take the class Editorial Leadership
  • Managing Editor
  Oversees all social media/public relations.
  Assists the EIC with any and all tasks.
  Oversees regular production and editing of blogs.
  Produces and assists in producing timely and appealing content.
  Oversees Assignment Editor and helps staff meet all deadlines.
  Helps ensure the accuracy of content.
  Assists in directing the breaking news team.
  Produces high quality content to push the limits of the site.
  • Assignment Editor (4-5)
  Works with a small group of staffers to proofread/revise writing and ensure that assignments (stories, photo captions, infographics, etc.) are assigned, completed, and adhere to quality standards.
  Oversees brainstorming of story assignments and helps find assignments for staffers who need them.
  Works with breaking news team to determine coverage responsibilities.
  Teaches copy skills as necessary to the staff.
  Produces high quality content to push the limits of the site.
  Should plan to take Editorial Leadership.
  • Social Media Director
  Ensures frequent content on all CSPN social media (Twitter, Instagram, Vine).
  Promotes RedEye content through theCSPN Twitter.
  Must maintain good public relations on all social media.
  Oversees any contests through the accounts.
  • Staff Writer
  Writes news stories, features, profiles, content for infographics,  and/or blogs.
  Searches for story ideas (note: this is not a beat reporter position). 
  • Multimedia Director
  Oversees all video, audio, slideshow, podcast, etc. content on site.
  Teaches multimedia skills as necessary to the staff. Works individually with less experienced students on their projects.
  Ensures the quality of the content.
  Searches for stories and assigns content as needed.
  Creates a special multimedia project on a regular basis.
  Ideal candidate will have had Broadcast and Photojournalism and be a second year staff member. We will consider applicants with other qualifications.  
  • Multimedia Staff Members (videographers, etc)
  Works with producers and editors as needed for any necessary video recording or technical work.
  May also work with audio, Flash, graphics, etc. 
  This is an entry-level position. Taking Broadcast is beneficial but not required.
  • Photo Editor (1-2)
  Assigns photo shoots and photographs as necessary.
  Ensures that all necessary events are being photographed
  Approves photo galleries and monitors completion and corrections. 
  Is taking or has taken Photoj I/II. 
  Teaches, mentors, critiques, and serves as technical adviser on photographic composition, camera operation, Photoshop, audio slideshows to photographers and other staff.
  Manages other photo content as needed.
  • Photographer
  Works under the Photo Editor to attend events.
  Posts photo galleries or photo illustrations to accompany articles. 
  Makes photo-related multimedia content, like slideshows. 
  Ideal candidate will have taken Photoj, but we will consider other applicants wishing to learn. 
  • Video Editor (1-2)
  Needs to be in Broadcast or have taken Broadcast.
  Reviews/edits video content for the site.
  Shoots and edits video clips from events (can accompany stories).
  Serves as as video troubleshooter/tech support for staff. Teaches video skills as needed.
  Advises adviser on equipment needing repair/replacement.
  • Webmaster (Online) (2-3)
  Uploads and manages content on the web site.
  Plans, controls, and maintains web design.
  Troubleshoots technical problems.
  Helps create/aides in creation of special projects requiring technical expertise.
  Handles reporting assignments as available.
  Works with designers to explore visual changes to the site (themes, layout, etc.)
  • Sports Editor (2-3)
  Posts varsity scores and applicable info to a sports stats page within 24 hours of each event’s completion.
  Works with a team to Tweet to @theCSPNsports (at least 2-3 times weekly) important sports info, such as live game plays, score updates, upcoming events, ticket info, etc. 
  Works with Live Content Producer to oversee & coordinate live Twitter reporting of sports events.
  Leads a small team in planning and creating sports features (articles, video, audio, etc.).
  Ensures that all major sporting events are being thoroughly covered and live-tweeted
  • Graphic Designer
  Designs infographics for stories with content from staff writers.
  Designs web banners for breaking news, blogs, or special coverage.
  Explores new design possibilities for the site (logos, ears, ad designs, etc.)
  • Ad Editor
  Sells advertising to the community for our website.
  Maintains a list of accounts and keeps good public relations.
